MOO Music Gathering

Feb 28-Mar 2, 2025
Participant-Led Workshops

PLEASE let us know if you would like to offer a workshop at a future Gathering!

Jumpin’ Jug Band!

And the Doctor said, "Give 'em jug band music!!"   We will talk briefly about history and the make up of jug bands. Mostly we'll play some great Jug Band songs 'to make us feel just fine.’ (Song sheets provided) Bring your instruments - kazoo, jug, washboard, washtub bass and all the regular string types (even banjos!).

Session Leader:  Peter Lee

Parody Songs

This workshop is intended for people who enjoy song parodies, as I do, but also might have some ideas for parodies or might like to try their hand at writing one.  I plan to divide this workshop into three parts:  First, we’ll play a few parodies to get warmed up and set the tone.  I will include song sheets with lyrics and chords.  Bring your instruments, if you wish.  Next, I’d like to review some basic tips for how to write parodies, using examples.  Lastly, as time permits, I’d like to devote some time to listening to any parodies you the participants might like to share with the group  and perhaps give some feedback and suggestions.

Session Leader:  Tom Zachek

“Stayin’ Alive” in Child Ballads

This workshop will cover some background on Francis Child and his ballad collecting.  We will then go over several ballads where no one dies (but that doesn’t mean they have happy endings 🙂).

Session Leader:  Dan Geddes

Introduction to Drop D Tuning for Guitar

Dropping the low E string to D is perhaps the simplest alternate tuning for guitar, but it opens up a world of new opportunities for arranging your songs. We’ll step through some examples of songs by Bill Staines,  John Denver, and even the Beatles to show how you can add a whole new dimension to your guitar playing.

Session Leader:  Rick Fitzgerald

Ukulele Lagniappe

Bring your uke and two songs to share.  Please include tenor and baritone versions with the chords for each. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn some new tunes and play old favorites with your fellow ukers! This workshop culminates in a group appearance at the Open Mic.

Session Leader:  Michael Nepper

Original Song Round Robin

Have a song to sing?  Bring your original song (or songs!) to the Original Song Round Robin.  You’ll have a chance to share your creative talents and get feedback (if you want it) from fellow song writers.  Listeners are always welcome!

Session Leader:  Bob Estes
