Participant-Led Workshops
PLEASE let us know if you would like to offer a workshop at a future Gathering!
Civil War Songs
We all know "Goober Peas" and "Dixie" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". In the workshop titled "Civil War Songs" we'll look at some of the more unfamiliar songs written during that period. Songs used to spur enlistment, songs to recognize Lincoln, about battles, abolitionist songs and humorous songs. We will finish the workshop with an anti war song that will "cause your blood to chill". I will share some of my favorites that tell the story.
Session Leader: Don Starr
Ukulele Conversance
Bring your uke and two songs to share. Please include tenor and baritone versions with the chords for each. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn some new tunes and play old favorites with your fellow ukers! This workshop culminates in a group appearance at the Open Mic.
Session Leader: Ling Naiva

Original Song Round Robin
Have a song to sing? Bring your original song (or songs!) to the Original Song Round Robin. You’ll have a chance to share your creative talents and get feedback (if you want it) from fellow song writers. Listeners are always welcome!

Songs and Tunes for Dulcimer
Dulcimer players of all levels should be able to get something out of this workshop. It will cover a review of basic chords, an exploration of the use of a dulcimer capo (capos provided, but bring your own if you have one), and exposure to some songs and tunes. Handouts will include chord and capo charts, and original tablature for several pieces: “The Hills of Isle Au Haut” by Gordon Bok, the traditional song “Who’s That Knocking at My Window”, and the midwestern fiddle tune “Rush and the Pepper” collected and popularized by Lynn “Chirps” Smith.
Session Leader: Dan Geddes
Exploring Acoustic Folk Blues
If you check out the blues sections of the Rise Up Singing books, you'll find a wide range of songs considered blues in folk music. Participants can share a blues song or two (however you interpret the meaning of blues) or you can just come to listen, make requests or ask questions. For fingerstyle guitar players there will be a chance to learn a short instrumental blues piece with tablature.
Session Leader: Barbara Hoffman
Kids Songs
Have a kid in your life? Or know someone who acts like a kid?. Some of the best songs have been written for children. We will cover a bunch of them. Bring your instrument, your voice, and your child-like sense of wonder. Why should kids have all the fun!
Session Leader: Kristin Ponnambalam
Irish Pub Songs
With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, join me for a singalong and jam of Makem-and-Clancy-style Irish pub songs, from the rousing to the tender. Irish songs can be about anything, but mostly we’ll do the four main themes: love, the land, rebellion, and alcohol consumption. Packet with lyrics and chords provided. Wearin’ o’ the green not required, but do bring your instruments, your voices, and your good cheer. Sláinte!
